Jan Fernhout says: "In 2018, the Wantij underwent repowering. Stage V became mandatory for inland shipping from 2019 onwards, while many thought this would not be possible.

We have been doing business with Vink diesel for over 30 years, and Sander mentioned having a Euro VI engine. This engine had already proven itself well in trucks but not yet in inland shipping. We were among the first to adopt it. We carefully weighed the benefits of a DAF Paccar MX-13 against the cost, and ultimately decided to go for it."

These highly efficient engines have more than earned back the higher purchase price; now they are bringing in money Jan Fernhout

"Fortunately, we have not regretted taking the step towards these extremely fuel-efficient engines for a moment. One advantage is that everything comes from one manufacturer; it is all well-coordinated. The target was a fuel saving of 15%, but in practice, it turns out to be 17.5%. The engine room is quieter, and I always have the same mechanics on board. I value that highly.

Even after 10,000 operating hours, the particulate filters have not required any maintenance. We are also extending the oil change intervals; with the extended service interval filters, we have doubled the standard interval of 1000 hours to over 2200 operating hours. What doesn't go in, doesn't come out. So, not only better for our wallet but also certainly for the environment. These highly efficient engines have more than earned back the higher purchase price; now they are bringing in money. We hope to sail successfully with DAF for many years to come."
